Rob States: "This board just makes me want to surf… no matter what the waves are like. It flies in small to weak waves, and if its overhead and pumping it draws unique lines, allowing me to approach waves differently and explore new lines".

At first glance the outline pays homage to the old school fish but on closer inspection you’ll notice some subtle changes. I’ve narrowed up the swallow tip to tip to give the board more maneuverability and the narrower nose gives it a more speedier outline. The rocker is fairly relaxed with a low entry rocker upfront combined with a subtle tail rocker, giving this board quick ‘up and go’ and maximizes its top-end speed.

The bottom contours are best described as “BOARD EAT BOARD” and were inspired by a George Greenough design I rode a few years ago. I’ve refined it over the years and it now features a really flat bottom concave that runs down the center all the way through the tail. The two side panels run down each rail on either side of the center panel, and transition from concave to flat to Vee while maintaining the deep single concave down the middle.

The overall effect of these design parameters, when combined with a keel fin set up, is a highly maneuverable and speedy board with tons of drive and takes the retro fish to a whole new performance level.

HEY ROB, WHAT IS THE SEASIDE..?

Just evolving the Go Fish to something new, really. The Go Fish goes fast and feels skatey and loose and I love it, and riding it for a couple years made me want to feel more high performance – more carves, tighter turns. So the Seaside is about refining… less area in the tail, narrowing the tips of the swallow, creating more curve and narrowing the nose. All elements for ripping while the Go Fish stays cruisey and fun.

The Seaside is quad only, why?

I decided that if i was going to make a quad I would make a quad that’s strictly a quad … Design the concaves and bottom contours around that. I actually redesigned my entire concave setup that I’ve been using on the Moonbeam and Go Fish, and did it with the quad setup in mind so that it all works together.

Why name this shape after your home break, Seaside?

Naming surfboards might be the hardest thing to do on the planet [laughing]. It’s just the perfect little stick when I surf my home spot, Seaside.

Why is the Seaside built in Helium?

The first one I made for Tahiti was LFT and I was riding it in 6 foot tubes. But most everyone surfs a shape like the Seaside at beach breaks and little point breaks, so we made it in Helium because it’s really light, very responsive, really flexy with a softer feel and very durable. It’s the best option for a shape like the Seaside in smaller, weaker waves, I think.

I’ve really been wanting to play around with some longer fishy kind of boards for a while now… Ever since I spent some time with skip frye and he showed me some of his fishes in the 7 foot range It’s been on my mind.  I first stretched out the GO FISH and made a 7 footer.  It worked great and really got my mind spinning.  Then I made a 7’0 seaside and it became one of my favorite boards in my quiver.  I rode it in everything.  Super small days, bigger days and everything in between.  It’s become a board that I will take with me every where I go.

It glides.  It turns on a dime and most importantly… it puts a smile on my face.

EVO (Evolution) is a new take on the MPH design, utilizing softer features and more outline curve to encourage a smoother transitions and a more  ‘in the pocket’ line of attack. A wider central wide point comparative to the Vader, the EVO should be considered favorable to smaller weaker waves, however like most Tomo MPH Designs , the EVO will still be quite functional in overhead waves conditions.

Maintaining  an almost symmetrical outline and a completely unique and highly innovative “Double inside single concave into split quad concave” planing hull, The EVO feels as if it’s almost ‘levitating’ on the water! Yet once on rail,  it has a precise rail sensitivity and hold. The EVO should be ridden as short as possible

The SUBMOON is the ultimate FUNshape. Designer Nev Hyman explains: “We combined a contemporary rocker and concaves and even thickness distribution with a quirky FUNshape outline that encourages a more vertical shortboard approach to the traditional longboard style of surfing. The outline has generous curve between your feet, which encourages the board to get on rail and TURN! The narrower moon tail provides bite, drive and direction, and the snub nose carries area forward for a bit of tip hang-cheater five FUN.”

The Gamma is Kelly’s 2017 utility short board! Though Kelly has worked with several great shapers this past year on an array of different shapes, it was his excitement with the speed and quick direction changes provided by this personal design that held his intrigue. His interest in CAD board design, modifying variables, and testing and retesting has lead to the development of an incredible all around short board.

With a single concave bottom and slight vee behind the back fin, this board is extremely fast and drivey. The vee out the back makes for quick rail to rail transitions. Within the hi performance short board range this would be considered a medium rocker with a med to even a slightly pinched rail.

The distinct hip on the Gamma gives it a tighter turning radius allowing it to be ridden in a shorter wider set of dims as well as the common performance short board dims. This board excels in a broad range of waves and conditions.

The Gem is a collaboration between Dan Mann and 3X World Longboard Champion Taylor Jensen.

Earlier this year Taylor asked Dan to consider a ‘one board in the trunk’ option for long boarders who want both trim and turns; he was essentially asking Dan for a design that would land somewhere between his TJPro and his TJEveryday.

Dan’s response was an intriguing intersection of shortboard style concaves with a longboard style outline and the same fin placements that Taylor likes in all his boards.

He and Taylor decided to call this model The Gem because of how valuable it is - a one board quiver for 9 foot plus board riders that can trim on the nose as easily as it can carve on rail.

The diamond tail isn’t a coincidence. It’s a Gem.

This board in the Crossover category of board design which fits nicely in this often overlooked part of a quiver. What went into this board is an intense level of attention to detail with Wingnut’s input and experience.

There’s a significant amount of volume stashed within the sensitive, performance rail and the nicely foiled nose and tail. The bottom is made up of a mostly flat entry that flows into a bellied V that runs out the tail. The rocker is curvy and allows for versatility and maneuverability as well as drawing clean lines. The range of surf that a board like this will work for rivals most any style of board.

In 2015 I was asked to shape Kelly a board for the first time.

I knew immediately what I wanted to make him.

I saw it all in my head immediately; from the bottom contour to the tail template. The way the volume would distribute through the width, the whole shape… It might actually be the most intuitive design I’ve ever done, probably because I’ve spent so many years both watching Kelly surf, and shaping boards.

As crazy as it sounds I was certain it would work for him. Totally certain.

The odd thing is, after sending him the board in 2015, I never heard from Kelly about how the board went, and I sort of just moved on to other stuff.

Then one afternoon in 2017 I got this stream of text messages one day about how Kelly was blowing up at Trestles on my board. It totally caught me off guard. Just text messages and phone calls flying in from everyone.

I sorted through everyone’s messages and learned that Kelly’s good friend from Florida who was in town at the time had grabbed the board from Kelly’s shed where it had sat un-surfed for two years.

He surfed it and then told Kelly that Kelly would love it based on having known Kelly his whole life, and having a good idea about what boards he likes and doesn’t like, based on all the times the two of them had swapped boards before.

Anyway, thankfully Kelly took his friends advice and loved the board from the first turn.

Kelly actually said he knew the FRK was a keeper before he’d even completed his first wave on it. Two weeks later he took it to J Bay and did what a lot of people called his best surfing of the year.

Since that contest, he’s ridden the FRK everywhere in videos and at key events like the Founders Cup, J Bay again in 2018, and the Surf Ranch Pro. He’s also surfed it all around the North Shore this Winter.

Actually the FRKs he’s been riding this Winter have been straight out of Firewire’s factory, and I’m stoked we were able to so smoothly transition the custom FRKs I’ve been making him since 17’ into the final version from Firewire’s factory that will be at surf shops everywhere. To see Kelly embrace the shape and build exactly as it will hit surf shops is awesome.

If I had to describe the nuts and bolts of the FRKs design, I’d simply say it’s made to make you forget it’s there.

When designing boards for Kelly I’m trying to remove as many variables as possible and make it something that can level up his talents, or the talents of other surfers, without any glitches, or ever feeling like its in your way.

I can’t wait to see everyone riding it in 19’.

From Surfboard Designer | Dan Mann

The first Baked Potato I ever made was for my buddy Chris in late 2010.

I had been surfing the Sweet Potato which I loved. I literally laughed hysterically after the very first wave I caught on it. I had never gone so fast with so much control on such weak waves ever before.

At Firewire we had been having great success with the Sweet Potato at the time that I made that first Baked Potato. I made it because I thought it could bet more racey and more performance oriented than a Sweet Potato.

It didn’t take long to pull in the nose and refine the bottom a little, and the tail just kind of popped into my head when I realized that point behind the back quad fins can add a bit more of a pivot point.

The Baked Potato sits firmly in the groveler style of a board but the best part about it is when I see people ripping on it in overhead surf which I see all the time. If you ride one, don’t underestimate how well it will go in good surf that’s overhead.

I think most surfers will enjoy this board most as a quad set up with a small nubster in the thruster box.
